What connects Baroque music to jazz?
More than you might think.
Improvisation, rhythm, delicacy, passion—all of these are part of Baroque music. Three centuries later, the same elements also define jazz.
Of course, jazz has many faces. But its origins—just like those of the Baroque—lie in the art of improvisation: music is created in the moment.
Pianist and composer Mike Kaufmann-Portnikow presents a solo concert in the form of a musical monologue, in which the grand piano narrates, sketches, and improvises.
The “Baroque-Jazz” program features musical portraits based on themes by Bach, Scarlatti, Berezovsky, and Wedel, as well as the world premiere of Mike Kaufmann-Portnikow’s new work , “A Small Cycle of Jazz Sonatas.”
The European press describes Mike Kaufmann-Portnikow as a “master of improvisation” and a “magician of sound.” Each of his concert evenings begins with an intensive exploration of the musical material and numerous rehearsals, culminating in improvisation on stage. That is why no two concerts are alike.
“If they were alive today, they would play jazz.” That is how Mike Kaufmann-Portnikow describes the Baroque composers.
