Event description

As part of the “Into the Open Season – Music Festival 2026,” the renowned Shavnabada Choir—following its great successes in 2024 and 2025—will perform for the first time in Germany at the Elbphilharmonie, presenting musical traditions from various regions of Georgia.

The concert seamlessly blends simple and complex Georgian polyphonic works, offering the audience a diverse range of musical experiences. The program features a rich selection of Georgian music, including melismatic compositions, melodic lyrical songs, the Gurian “Krimanchuli” (a unique yodeling style), and the resonant melodies of ancient traditional instruments, some of which are over a thousand years old.

The repertoire includes traditional Christian and pagan hymns as well as excerpts from contemporary Georgian music. Each piece in the concert is introduced with a brief commentary that shares the stories behind these songs with the audience.

Founded in early 2005, the Shavnabada Folklore Ensemble is a leading representative of Georgian polyphonic singing and hails from the vibrant city of Tbilisi in Georgia. Since its founding, its mission has been to preserve and promote Georgian polyphonic singing, which was recognized by UNESCO in 2001 as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Over the years, the members of the Shavnabada ensemble have worked tirelessly to revive this cultural heritage and have brought numerous folk masterpieces back to life. Their travels have taken them to various regions of Georgia, where they have discovered forgotten musical pieces and presented these timeless songs on both local and international stages.

The concert is part of the Into the Open 2026 music festival.

“Into the Open” (ITO) is a new-generation music festival. It connects people across national and genre boundaries. It brings together people who love classical music and want to experience it in new ways. It also connects different art forms. Outstanding young musicians from around the world present classical music alongside artists from other genres such as dance, theater, and the visual arts. This creates unique experiences.
