From a simple Riga student to a legend of the Soviet screen
Biography of Ivars Kalnynsha in his youth is not pestiferous with some bright events. The artist was born in 1948 in Riga, in the family of an automobile mechanic and a housewife, and at first had nothing to do with creativity. Parents wanted their son to get a "practical" profession, and as a teenager Ivar began to study locksmithing, and later began repairing computer equipment.
But still the young man's creative nature could not be hidden. He played in several rock bands and was a real "Beatleman", and after graduating from high school he decided to connect his life with art. He enrolled in the Latvian State Conservatory of Music. Я. Vitola at the theater faculty, and in 1974 he successfully completed his studies.
In the conservatory, the future actor received a truly fundamental training. And already from the first year he began to be invited to shoot in movies, for example, he played in the films "The Right to Jump", "Ilga-Ivolga", "Sancho's Faithful Friend" and others. As a result, his studies became the basis on which Ivar Kalnynsh's career later grew. Early works made him a notable artist, and gave a start to a great path in theater and cinema.
Theater career in Rainis and Shakespeare's classics
The big stage opened its doors when the artist, after graduating from the conservatory, came in 1972 to the Rainis Theater, one of the leading theaters in Latvia. It was here that his mature stage style was formed, which audiences have come to love for its multi-layered nature and emotional depth. He has performed numerous roles, including:
Richard Tishkov in Leonid Zhukhovitsky's Orpheus;
Don Antonio in Richard Sheridan's "Dueña";
Treplev in The Seagull by Anton Chekhov;
Indulis in Rainis's "Indulis and Aria."
Benedict in Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing;
Michael in Sam Sheppard's "A Clever Lie."
Munchausen in "The Marriage of Munchausen" by M. Sievert.
In each production, the artist demonstrated different facets of his talent, and a total of almost 30 years of service to Melpomene on the stage of the theater "Dailes". Later he collaborated with other theater companies, and also began to participate in an entreprise.
Features of Ivar's style
The style of play of the artist has always been distinguished by nobility, restraint and deep emotionality. During the preparation for roles, he invariably paid great attention to the inner world of the character and has always avoided external naïveté. This allowed him to create a unique stage handwriting, which distinguished him among other actors, and made a real star of the theater.
Many directors noted his ability to listen to his partner on stage, which makes the game natural and convincing. An important element of his work was the ability to work with both classical texts and modern works. He created images that combined strength, subtlety of character, and dramatic depth.
Thanks to these qualities, he won the respect of his colleagues and the love of the audience. His performances in the theater became a significant part of the cultural life of Latvia, and productions with his participation were often a real full house.

The world premiere of Ivan Vyrypayev's play "The Only Tallest Trees on Earth".A new play by Ivan Vyrypayev, one of Europe's most famous contemporary playwrights, will have its world premiere in Germany.This is the first joint creative project of artists with Ivan Vyrypayev - the author, whose plays have been translated into more than 30 languages and are performed on the stages of dozens of theaters around the world.In a deliberately simple form, the three actors engage in a dialog in which the funny and the disturbing, the everyday and the philosophical are juxtaposed. The simple form of conversation becomes a way to ask difficult questions - those that everyone faces in life, but does not always dare to say out loud.As in his best works, Vyrypayev combines a play with the rhythm of the word, a virtuoso mastery of the text with paradoxical metaphors and a constant change of the author's optics, forcing the viewer to look at familiar themes from a new angleagain and again.Using the very structure of language as a theatrical tool, the playwright turns the utterance of the text into an independent element of the stage action. The spectator is immersed in the author's special universe, where layer by layer the inner feelings of the characters are revealed , gradually leading to the main questions - about faith, about love and about the search for the meaning of life.Director: M. MishinActors: Chulpan Khamatova, Maria Mashkova, Vasily ZorkyProducers: A. Markvo, M. VolkovAjoint project of the Teal House Foundation and Bird&Carrot Productions.
"Bench" - Alexander Gelman's legendary play for the first time on the stages of Germany.In May 2026, audiences in Germany will see for the first time one of the most important texts of Soviet dramaturgy - Alexander Gelman's play "The Bench", which has remained a subtle exploration of human intimacy and loneliness for four decades.Created in 1983 and long banned from staging, "The Bench" tells of a chance meeting between a man and a woman who once knew each other but now seem to be meeting for the first time.
