1899, St. Petersburg at Christmas. A vibrant festive atmosphere buzzes along the capital’s ice-bound rivers and canals. On the eve of the new century, fate brings together people who, it would seem, were never meant to meet. People from completely different worlds: Matvey, the son of a lamplighter, whose only possession is a pair of silver-plated skates he inherited; and Alisa, the daughter of a high-ranking official, who dreams of a career in science. Each has their own difficult story, but once their paths cross, they set off together in pursuit of their dreams.
