Meeting with director Ilya Khrzhanovsky in Berlin 10 March 2024

Another meeting in the cycle of A. Smolyansky's series "Travel as self-discovery".

Ilya Khrzhanovsky is the author of the films "4" (based on V. Sorokin) and the film art project DAU. In 2020 he was appointed artistic director of the Babi Yar Holocaust Memorial Center in Kiev. In 2023, Khrzhanovsky resigned from this post, saying that the war changed everything.

At the meeting we will discuss the situation in Russia and Ukraine, different approaches to depicting life in cinema, the history and main ideas of the DAU project, the concept of the Babi Yar center and the reasons why both projects caused controversy. We will talk about appraisal, self-censorship, and the artist's right to creative freedom.
