Art always speaks to life and reflects on fundamental needs. And what are a person’s basic desires? Of course—food, sleep, and sex. Since time immemorial, people have depicted sexuality in various ways in order to recognize and understand not only their own bodies but also their relationships with one another, as well as the possibilities for interaction.

This lecture explores the sexual culture of all times and peoples—from the primitive and archaic cultures of Egypt and Greece to the 21st century. This exploration will vividly demonstrate, through masterpieces, how sex evolved from a sacred ritual into a way of talking about anything but oneself. At the same time, it will open our eyes to just how much sex is present in our familiar and beloved masterpieces of visual art.
